Suddenly, Last Summer unfolds two conflicting memories of the absent main character, Sebastian Venable, who dies one year before this play begins. Sebastian's family battles in his garden to codify a singular memory of him. Mrs. Venable, his mother, fights to protect her son's memory as wholesome and pure, while Catherine Holly, Sebastian's cousin, confesses another story. With the threat of lobotomy, Catherine tells a story of Sebastian's darker side ending with his gruesome murder. A young doctor with a dangerous new treatment, the lobotomy, arbitrates over the scene to decide the family's fate.
